Roberto and I recently wandered off to the desert for a weekend of punishment.  I’d been sport climbing, or climbing easier stuff for a while and I needed to get WRECKED!  I asked Roberto if he was up for some punishment and he gave me a big fat YES.  We flipped through the guide, and found our instruments of self annihilation.

Solana Beach, California.  In a garage overlooking the ocean we train wednesday nights at sunset.  Performance is abysmal.   Success is measured in seconds of hanging on, not getting to the top.

A couple of weeks ago we had the opportunity to check out the new climbing gym in San Diego that we had been hearing about. The main attractions (in my mind) are 52 ft lead walls, top out bouldering walls, a bunch of cracks at different sizes, and a weight room.  Mesa Rim is scheduled for a grand opening on May 22nd. The piercing sound of gunfire rang out through the desert air, sending Charles, Asa and myself scampering for cover against the desert chaparral.  Our panicked,  semi-crouched positions belied our combat inexperience.  Storms, avalanches, crevasses, rockfall — between the three of us we’ve faced our share of objective hazards.  But the very real possibility of being shot was a new one.  More »
