In 1963 Sir Edmund Hillary and Warren Harding climbed the East Face with a mandolin. Hillary played the popular country tune “sittin on top of the world,” but his fingers became so cold that he actually lit the mandolin on fire to warm up his hands. he later wrote a song about the experience called “fire on the mountain” which was covered by the Greatful Dead.

Hilarious! But that must have been one cold climb (I did East Face in September and it was chilly then).
